Put some money "in the bank," but don't expect anything back for a while - we will hold onto this money until we see the results of the first round. If it's no good, we will refund your investment without risking it. But if the first round goes well, then this money will be used to finance a bigger trial and determine the business plan. When (if!) we get your money back, you will have second-priority opportunity to invest it in our business model.
Your ten dollars, or multiple of ten, will go into a fund which will be used to finance the second prototypes and field-tests for the Alchemy Project, after the first round has been completed.
The first trial will test the basic idea, that a hard-working entrepreneur can repay a start-up loan for this business. If the first round is not successful or useful, we will refund all monies that have been loaned to the second round fund, without conducting a second trial.
Your loan to the second trial will be used to improve the system and experiment with different incentive schemes. If we got the economics right (and we have tried our best to be certain about this) then you should get your money back in six-nine months. There is certainly a good business case for the idea.
If the second trial is also positive, we will develop the business plan based on what we have learned. If you invested in the second round, you will have the first opportunity, ahead of everyone except the first-round investors, to invest in this business. Your investment rights will be proportional to the amount you have put into the trials.
We cannot guarantee you will get all your money back from the second round, but we can't guarantee that we will ever get anything back for the time and energy we're putting into this either. Whatever the outcome, we believe that we will be helping a few people to have the opportunity of a better life. For us, it's worth trying.
The second round is the least risky opportunity to invest we can devise. First, we test the business case using the money from the first round. If we don't get the money back, then we don't proceed with the second round. We only lend your money to our entrepreneur partners if the first group repay their loans. (We're collecting cash now because we anticipate it might take a few months to raise enough money, but we could be wrong - the fund may be fully-subscribed before you make your decision, and you will lose your priority opportunity to invest in the business when the time comes.)
If you can't afford to risk US$10, then maybe you shouldn't be reading this? If you belong to the "top 20%" of the world's population, the group that owns >80% of all the wealth in the world, the group that can afford internet access, then maybe it's time for you to invest some of that wealth in someone who needs it more than you do? You might even make a profit!
