I saw "Batman Begins" recently and wondered how the movie would have been if Bruce Wayne had been a bit more normal.
Imagine, for instance, a group of fairly ordinary people watching the same movie and discussing the viability of creating a superhero persona using real technology. And continuing to talk about it. And researching, just for fun, until it becomes an obsession.
I think there's some mileage to be got from this theme. It starts as a bit of fun, but the psychological problems of the protagonists eventually drive them to do something a bit crazy. You could probably make it reasonably funny, as there would be plenty of scope for disasters while learning to use various gadgets.
And no doubt the hero's first outing would go horribly wrong. I see hardened criminals making fun of insecure men in funny outfits who don't know how to respond. Maybe they would have to be slightly out of shape men in funny outfits?
For a movie to work I guess the heroes would have to triumph in the end and do something wrong, but maybe a good twist would be to have them finish up being arrested as vigilantes? Nobody's above the law, and all that.
A long way to go to even get a storyline from this, but I can see the poster: portly ever-so-slightly-ridiculous but earnest-looking superhero with the city spread out behind him, and a tagline like "a new hope emerges". Maybe they need some kind of robot too?
