Most Recent Common Ancestor |
I dreamt this up, got all excited about it, then discovered that there were several companies already doing it. Some have been around for ten years, which is a bit of a blow, but also a vindication.
The idea was to build web-based system that allowed people to enter their family trees, and compare them to find matches. This would eventually link people who didn't previously have any connection, via some distant shared relative - the most recent common ancestor.
Still, there's lots of stuff that can be done with this that isn't being done yet. One of the things that inspired me to think about it was reading about research into genetic diseases - imagine how much more useful your data would be if your test subjects were not chosen randomly, but by their genetic heritage.
