engine
One would have to have very silent engines under the legs. What would be most silent? Electric motors? Or how about compressed air? One could have a big tank under the bed which is replenished during the day as needed. Of course then it would start looking like a much more complicated device. And maybe dangerous? And harder to install for sure. So...electrical then...

I guess one can build the device with lots of sound insulation. Just have to balance that with the cooling issue.

Anyone more engineering minded who can provide better suggestions?

conflict of interest
At the heart of the problem is that most businesses rent from landlords. While it might be completely logical and economic for them to make that kind of investments in order to save energy bills, they are unlikely to do so since they don't want to make improvements to their landlord's property. And, I am quite sure that sometimes the landlord would even forbid improvements they don't understand. After all, the landlord never have to pay the energy bills, so they won't care.

So how to internalize the pain of energy waste to both the business and their landlord?

really what we want?
Hmmm, I know we are not supposed to be negative here but I must say I am not fan of this idea. Its kind of like mobile phones on airplanes...just because its possible doesn't mean it should be implemented. Of course if there were simple ways to make it turned off as default...then it could perhaps become the next natural step - when one wants it. But a fair number of people will of course compete to come up with the most foul smelling concoctions the machine can produce. Imagine sitting in the office and suddenly have the computer giving off a foul smelling egg fart...great! NSFW I would say:)
